US did beat Algeria 2-0, well predicted Raf. Except, yet again, a completely clean American goal was stolen by a referee on a bogus offsides call. Add in Dempsey getting punched in the face inside Algeria’s box in the late second half, which should have produced a penalty shot and red card, and this was yet another poorly officiated game. What may have saved us is that it was a very clean game, barring the last 10 minutes, and the ref didn’t have to be a factor in it much at all.

Fortunately, Donovan’s heroics saved American papers from printing this headline tomorrow: “USA goes 2-0-1, wins group, fails to advance.”
